How Cryoablation Therapy Works
Cryoablation is an ablation technique that broadly refers to using extremely cold temperatures to destroy tissue. Also known as cryotherapy, cryosurgery, or percutaneous cryoablation. This form of cryoablation therapy can be applied to various forms of cancer to eliminate cancer cells or diseased tissue and potentially shrink tumors. The cryoablation process brings temperatures down to below -75 degrees Celsius. This can effectively kill cancer cells and tumor tissue in a controlled manner while doing minimal damage to the surrounding tissue.
Studies also suggest that cryoablation leads to an immune-specific reaction that may extend beyond just the ablated tissue and can actually help improve already healthy tissue as well. Cancer cells are known to escape the immune system for a variety of mechanisms. This ablation method gives the patient’s body a chance to stop this from happening, while targeting the tumor cells without harming the surrounding tissue.
Cryoablation can be used on its own, or it can be combined with other forms of treatment related to cell death. Along with its potential to destroy cancerous, diseased tissue, cryoablation can be used to relieve pain and other symptoms caused by cancer, particularly forms of cancer that have metastasized.
How Cryoablation Therapy is Administered
During cryoablation, a cryoprobe (a thin needle) is inserted through the patient’s skin, into the tumor. This minimally invasive procedure distributes a gas, usually argon, that is pumped through the cryoprobe into the tumor cells to bring down the temperature to below freezing. Once the tissue is frozen, it is allowed to thaw. This cycle of freezing and thawing continues several times within one treatment session to kill the cancerous tissue. Follow-ups and close monitoring are necessary following the cryoablation procedure to ensure that the cryotherapy treatment was effective. The process is minimally invasive and has a much shorter patient recovery time than other forms of treatment, like surgical resection.
A variety of clinical trials centering around cryoablation therapy have been focused on breast cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer. If you have been experiencing pain from a tumor or mass, cryoablation therapy may be a good fit for you. Additional questions?
