Discovering Dendritic Cell Therapy
Dendritic cell based immunotherapy was first approved in 2010 in the United States as a vaccination cancer therapy for prostate cancer and cancer cell treatment. Since then, there have been over 4,500 studies during clinical trials published on patients treated with this cancer vaccine. In cancer research studies, dendritic cell cancer treatment has been found to provide therapeutic and protective antitumor immunities. Clinical trials for cancer patients with melanoma, glioma, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma show promising antitumor results. Dendritic cell therapy is also proven to be effective in providing an immune cell response for pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer during clinical trials.
How Does Dendritic Cell Therapy & Vaccine Treatment Work
Dendritic cell (DC) cancer cell vaccine treatment is a unique form of immunotherapy that has become more relevant among cancer patients. Autologous dendritic cells are rare leukocytes, a type of cell that plays a role in signaling the body’s immune system and developing stem cells in the bone marrow. The Dendritic cell is the most potent type of antigen presenting cell that is vital to proliferate T-lymphocyte, also known as a T Cell. Antigen helps the body trigger an immune response. By activating T cells with dc vaccination, dendritic cells help to promote antitumor immunity . These immune cells can help prevent the onset of cancer by suppressing tumor cell growth rates.
Dendritic cell therapy works by isolating dendritic cells with tumor antigen-loaded mature dendritic cells and administering them as a cellular, therapeutic vaccine. The process of performing DC therapy includes:
- Simple blood draw.
- Filtering of monocyte cells from peripheral blood and then loading it with tumor-associated antigens (TAA).
- Dendritic cell vaccination is then administered to the patient to attack tumour cells by activating T Cells in the lymph node(s).
Administrating DC therapy in a combination therapy with conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can serve as a promising treatment plan to improve its efficacy as well as boost the performance of the immune system.
How Is Dendritic Cell Therapy Administered?
Dendritic therapy via the dendritic cell vaccine can be injected intravenously, intramuscularly, intradermally, or directly into the tumor. Intervals for injection frequency of the DC vaccine can range from days to months to adapt an immune response. Consult with your doctor to determine the best mode of administration, dosage, and frequency of cancer immunotherapy based on your personal health needs.
