How Enzyme Therapy for Cancer Works
Enzymatic cancer treatment and therapy involves the use of natural systemic enzymes to neutralize cancer cells and shrink tumors in patients. While enzyme therapy research is still ongoing, initial studies are finding some promising results regarding certain enzymes that may affect the growth of cancer. One enzyme known as PEG-KYNase degrades the metabolite kynurenine, which is produced by tumor cells and suppresses the immune system. While PEG-KYNase may not directly kill cancer cells, it may support the immune system’s ability to kill cancer cells and stop the growth.
Other studies on the disease show the use of enzyme treatment, including alkaline phosphatase, carboxypeptidases, beta-glucosidases, and beta-lactamases, in directly killing cancer cells. Novel approaches suggest delivering these enzymes directly into cancer cells to trigger substantive damage that ultimately results in cancer cell death.
Studies also point to a proteolytic enzyme, which may affect the growth and size of cancer cells in patients.
Enzyme Therapy for Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer (PC) is within the top ten leading causes of cancer death around the world. This specific disease especially causes weight loss in many patients due to malnutrition. The leading causes of this malnutrition are due to intrinsic (tumor cell-triggered) and extrinsic (host-triggered) factors. As a result, PC patients may experience pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) which may be treated with the standard pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT). PERT comes in a form of oral enzyme supplements or digestive enzymes that patients can take with food. Patients who undergo PERT treatment can enhance nutritional health and build their immune function, allowing them to undergo other alternative treatments to fight cancerous cells and prevent tumor growth.
Systemic Enzyme Therapy
Systemic enzyme therapy is another form of enzyme therapy that uses high doses of enzymes to break down tumor cells and promote immune function by eliminating pathogenic microorganisms. Relative to PERT, systemic enzyme therapy helps to boost the effectiveness of other therapies by attacking cancerous cells and increasing enzyme activity in a patient’s body.
How Enzymatic Cancer Therapy is Administered
The appropriate treatment dosage and administration of enzymatic cancer therapy, as well as the specific enzymes to be used, may depend on the patient’s health and personal needs and the severity and stage of the disease. Injecting enzymes into cancer cells may work to kill cancer cells, inhibit growth, and shrink tumors.
