How Intraperitoneal Perfusion Hyperthermia Works
“Peritoneal” refers to the lining within the abdominal cavity. Cancer in the peritoneal cavity, resulting from colorectal cancer, appendiceal cancer, mesothelioma, and other forms of cancer, can be difficult to treat due to the vulnerability of surrounding organs and the depth of the tumors within tissues. Intraperitoneal perfusion hyperthermia offers a unique treatment for cancers within the abdominal cavity that combines different anticancer substances with hyperthermia. Hyperthermia refers to applying high heat to tumors and remaining cancer cells. Studies show that temperatures above 41 degrees Celsius effectively kills cancer cells without damaging surrounding tissue. The heat may also allow the anticancer substances treatment to penetrate deeper into the tissue, eliminating cancer cells that may not be seen.
How Intraperitoneal Perfusion Hyperthermia is Administered
The intraperitoneal perfusion hyperthermia process starts with a partial removal or debulking of the tumor prior to the hyperthermic intraperitoneal treatment, allowing for more efficient penetration into the remaining cancer cells. Following this removal of some of the cancerous tissue, the doctor will insert tubes into the body. One pumps the anticancer substances solution into the body, while the other pulls the fluid back into the heating equipment. The procedure heats the area within the abdominal cavity to about 40.6 to 42 degrees Celsius (105 to 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit). The procedure takes up to 90 minutes, during which the anticancer substances solution is continually circulated through the cancerous tissues.
